LEONA B. DIAMOND, 88 BELVIDERE - Leona B. Diamond, 88, entered into eternal life Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008. Leona had been a resident of Maple Crest Care Centre, Belvidere for the past seven years. Leona (Brown) Diamond was born Aug. 19, 1920, the daughter of Irving and Magdolane (Hauck) Brown. The family lived in Chicago until Leona was five years old, when they moved to Boone County to farm. Leona recalled growing up in those days required the family to work hard to provide a living. It was in Boone County where Leona met her husband, Edwin Claire Diamond. They were married on Feb. 12, 1938. For many years, Claire and Leona worked on the Wait Brother Farm, milking cows and tending to the cattle and pigs. Later settling on their own farm, just south of Garden Prairie. For many years Leona helped on the farm, raised her family, raised chickens and tended to the garden. She loved to preserve her abundant harvest by canning. In 1973, Leona and Claire moved to Belvidere. Claire continued to farm while Leona found work at the Champion Packaging Co. After working for 15 years, Leona retired in 1980. Claire passed away Sept. 13, 1993, at the age of 76. Leona loved to spend her time watching the Chicago Cubs, winning her share of the many family card games (pinochle was her favorite), playing bingo and taking her family out to eat.
